about Space coast FLIES

Space Coast Flies at its core is Ian (Space Coast, FL.) and Sam (Gulf Coast, AL.) They both grew up on the Gulf Coast of Alabama surfing, fishing, skateboarding and playing music…really anything to stay outside and keep them moving. Fishing since the can remember, the need for a new challenge and motivation brought them to tying flies and eventually to a business. Fly fishing and surfing have always been at the top of the list for fun and any way to spend more time outside near the water is the goal. For fly tying, it’s always inspiring to work with others and share ideas and techniques. They love to see what people create for their specific environments and situations, and recently started a fly tying collective to showcase good tyers and provide their customers with unique flies all in a central place.

WHY DO YOU TIE?

We’ve actually had this conversation recently and we both tie for the same reasons….creativity and to stay engaged. Tying is definitely an art form and the thought of making art that is actually useful is very rewarding. There is nothing better than watching something you created trigger a natural reaction from a fish. Tying flies is also a unique hobby in the way that it keeps you engaged and involved in fly fishing even when you aren’t actually fishing. Tying your own flies causes you to think more about what a fly actually does and that makes you a better angler in the end.

what ARE YOU THROWING?

No matter what the target or season there will always be some type of Small White Baitfish and a Hybrid Shrimp/Crab on our Fly Caddies. This Spring you can most likely find us walking the Central Florida flats for Snook & Redfish or on the Gulf beaches for Pompano & Speckled Trout. Calmer days are spent out in the skiff throwing poppers at big schools of Bull Reds or Jack Crevalle. The Fly Caddy is perfect to grab a couple flies for a quick wade on the flats or beach. It’s also great to stick on the skiff console for a quick fly change when the chaos starts.
